Sure Thing a winning machine for Smith
Trainer David Smith’s gamble on Sure Thing has paid off handsomely, with the former eastern states galloper proving to be a major success since arriving in WA. Picked up for just $13,000, Sure Thing has returned $37,728 in prize money, capturing five wins from seven starts across Esperance and Kalgoorlie.
Unbeaten in his last two Kalgoorlie outings and the winner of his first three Esperance runs, Sure Thing is now being prepped for Perth. Smith says the gelding, by Akeed Mofeed, has exceeded expectations. “He’s going really well,” Smith said to Racing WA. “We picked him out; he was a nice looker and had pace.”
Though the gelding arrived with poor feet, Smith’s partner Shannon Anthony managed to correct the issue, allowing Sure Thing to thrive. Now, Smith is chasing his first Saturday city win. “I’ve never had a Saturday winner, so I would like to get one before I give it away,” he said.
That city campaign could eventually lead to a dream run in the Hannans Handicap. “That’s a bit of a pipe dream but if he could measure up, he could be a chance,” Smith noted. “He got the 1300m quite easily yesterday (Sunday) and we should be able to stretch him out, hopefully.”
Sure Thing began his WA career with a 5½ length win at Esperance, and even in his rare defeats, has performed admirably. Belmont’s uncertain condition may force Smith to look at Pinjarra or Northam for Sure Thing’s Perth debut. Regardless, the Kalgoorlie highlight remains a major aspiration.
