Flying Embers set to target the 2025 Gunsynd Classic
In-form filly Flying Embers is set to take on the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm, as trainer John Thompson prepares her for her first black-type assignment following a successful Sydney campaign.
The daughter of Shalaa has been a model of consistency, winning four of her last five starts, including two Midway victories over 1400m at Kembla Grange and Randwick, the latter on heavy ground in a strong city-grade race.
“She’s a lovely type,” Thompson said.
“At Randwick, she was caught wide and had no favours, but still won convincingly. Coming back to her own age group next weekend is ideal.”
Despite the unknown of the mile, the trainer is optimistic about Flying Embers’ ability to handle the distance, citing her strong late sectionals in recent wins.
“She’s not tried the 1600m yet, but I think it suits her. She finishes off her races really well,” he noted.
Flying Embers is expected to be sent to the paddock after the Gunsynd Classic, with plans to bring her back for a spring campaign.
“That’ll likely be her last start this prep,” Thompson said.
“She’s in great shape and has earned the chance. We’ll look to target better races in the spring after a good break.”
