Buccleuch impressive in Flemington races win
Buccleuch gave the Patrick and Michelle Payne stable a potential spring star after delivering a commanding win in the TAB We’re On (1420m) at Flemington, echoing the path of former stablemate Cherry Tortoni.
Ridden by Billy Egan, who was also aboard Cherry Tortoni during his unbeaten juvenile campaign, Buccleuch surged clear for a 2-¼ length win over Arcora with Millennium Blade a further length away in third.
“He won really well today,” Egan said.
“I’ve ridden him all the way through in all his trials and races and he’s always been improving, but he’s never shown me the turn of foot like that.”
The win has drawn early comparisons to Cherry Tortoni, who after winning this race went on to secure the Gibson Carmichael Stakes, Group 2 Vase, and run fourth in the Victoria Derby.
Egan added, “This bloke is possibly a little slower to develop than he was but that win probably peaked like one of Cherry’s wins as well.”
Also at Flemington, the Paynes and Egan claimed the Ken Cox Handicap (2000m) with Stop The Rock, while Verona Rupes finished third and Frontline Action ran sixth. Michelle Payne confirmed all three may return for the Mahogany Challenge Series Final (2500m) next month.
