Quantum Cat finally gets the cream at Randwick races
Chris Waller’s Quantum Cat might not be a headline act, but his story and recent win have caught attention for more than just racing form.
The gelding’s unusual coat, which features large white patches due to a ringworm infection that altered the hair follicles, has made him something of a stable mascot.
“He is everyone’s favourite with his unusual markings. You can’t miss them,” assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth said.
“He got ringworm and the ringworm left a scar.
“It changed the hair follicles so they all came back white.”
While Quantum Cat has taken time to find his feet in Australia, his recent victory in the The Living Turf Handicap (1800m) at Randwick was a breakthrough performance.
“The last couple of races we have ‘ummed and ahhed’ whether he has been applying himself fully,” Duckworth admitted.
“At Hawkesbury, he was a little bit unlucky where he got struck across the nose.”
Zac Lloyd rode a smart race, guiding the $3 favourite to a confident win, finishing ahead of Hollywood Hero ($12) and outsider Kirkeby ($81).
Plans are now in motion to enter Quantum Cat in next Saturday’s Listed McKell Cup (2000m) at Rosehill, pending how the horse recovers from the weekend effort.
