Yellow Brick on road to 2025 Epsom Handicap

The Sears stable is still riding the wave of emotion from Yellow Brick’s bold second-place finish in the Stradbroke Handicap, a result that showed just how far their $20,000 bargain buy has come.

Trainer Tony Sears admits the performance left him emotional, but now attention turns to the spring, with the Group 1 Epsom Handicap set as a key target in Sydney.

Yellow Brick is currently enjoying a brief break before returning to work ahead of a likely return in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) at Randwick on August 23. That campaign start will follow a couple of preparatory trials.

In Queensland, the five-year-old struggled when placed closer to the pace in the BRC Sprint (1350m) but looked far more comfortable settling off speed in the Stradbroke, finishing powerfully to nearly cause an upset at $41 odds.

“We own him so we don’t have to race him much,” Tony said.

“We put the work into him at home and we know what we need to do to have him ready.

“He’s a strong horse and he came through the Stradbroke well.”

Yellow Brick posted a 119 rating in the Stradbroke, which puts him in elite company—close to the benchmark needed to win the Epsom, historically set around 117.

He currently sits at $51 in Epsom betting, trailing behind Autumn Glow, who tops the market at $3.50 for Chris Waller.

With eight wins and nine placings from 22 starts, Yellow Brick’s earnings are approaching $2.2 million—proof that sometimes the best racehorses don’t come with a big price tag.
