One more UK start for Carl Spackler before 2025 Cox Plate tilt
Carl Spackler will get one more run in the UK before launching his campaign towards the iconic Cox Plate in Australia.
Owned by Yulong and already a triple Grade 1 winner in the UK, the talented galloper made his debut for Ciaron Maher with a respectable sixth in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He is nominated for the upcoming Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, which could serve as his final outing before shipping to Australia.
Ciaron Maher Racing’s National Assistant Trainer, Jack Turnbull, confirmed that Carl Spackler’s campaign is still being mapped out with the Cox Plate as the likely destination.
“The Cox Plate has been voiced as being our premier race, but he is effective at a mile having won three Grade 1 races,” Turnbull said.
“What path he takes to get there (Cox Plate), we haven’t etched out yet, but his Grand Final could possibly be the Cox Plate.”
On his debut effort, Turnbull said: “He travelled strong for the first furlong, 300 metres, but Ciaron was pleased with what he saw. He pulled up well and will have one more run over there and then come out to Australia.”
Carl Spackler shares ownership with Via Sistina, who claimed last year’s Cox Plate, adding further intrigue to his Australian assignment.
