Weather key for Running By
Firm tracks are key for Running By, and the Ciaron Maher team may reroute her from Saturday’s MRC Chairman’s Club Handicap (1440m) at Caulfield if rain softens the surface too much.
The talented mare has drawn wide in gate 15 with John Allen aboard and could instead be saved for the Leilani Series Final at Flemington next week.
Running By has posted her best performances on good tracks, including a second-place finish in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes and wins at Caulfield and Flemington, including the Inglis Bracelet during last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.
“It’s a hard one as she’s a fast ground horse,” said Maher’s assistant Jack Turnbull. “She didn’t love the surface last start, but she’s progressing nicely.”
Her most recent start was a solid third to Hughes on a good track at Sandown, suggesting she is building toward peak fitness. “There was always going to be improvement, and we’re happy with where she’s at,” Turnbull added.
A decision will be made closer to race day depending on the weather and how the track shapes up, with confidence that Running By has more to give this prep.
