Maher hoping for McKell Cup Glory at Rosehill
Glory Daze is looking to break through at Rosehill this weekend as he tackles the Listed McKell Cup (2000m), with the Ciaron Maher stable confident he can be a factor despite favouring Randwick in past runs.
While his wins in Australia have all been at Randwick, Glory Daze showed he could handle Rosehill with a solid third in last month’s Lord Mayors Cup.
“He has probably got a better record at Randwick than he does at Rosehill but he has got that rating where we don’t have too many options so he probably has to run,” said Maher’s assistant Johann Gerard-Dubord. “But I couldn’t be happier with him. He is going well.”
The gelding has been kept fresh since his last run and looks set to peak again at the 2000-metre trip. “We have just kept him fresh. He was backing up last start so we have given him plenty of time between runs,” Gerard-Dubord added.
Although both of his recent strong performances came on heavy tracks, connections believe Glory Daze can perform on firmer going too. “I would have loved to see a bit more rain, but he’s at his right trip and I think it’s the right race,” he said.
The field has thinned slightly with Quietness scratched to instead target the Tattersall’s Gold Crown (2100m) in Queensland, giving Glory Daze one less rival to worry about.
