Earlswood looking to bounce back at Caulfield races
Earlswood looked poised for a stellar Australian career when he kicked off with victory in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) at Caulfield in 2022.
But wins have proven elusive since. Now under the care of Cranbourne trainer Gavin Bedggood, the Irish import has added just one more win to his record — the Gold Nugget at Ballarat in September last year.
Earlswood returns to Caulfield this weekend for the MRC Membership Feel The Thrill Handicap (2000m), coming in off two sound runs this campaign. His latest effort saw him finish second to Saban over 1800m at Sandown.
“He’s flying and he would be the healthiest horse in my stable,” Bedggood told RSN. “He’s got a coat on him like it’s the middle of summer.”
Bedggood emphasised that Earlswood thrives when ridden patiently. “When he gets clean air too far out, he presents to win the race and is just plain late,” he said. “He’s better when he can dart through late.”
John Allen will partner him once more, aiming to repeat past success. Earlswood has opened as the $5 second pick, with Sayedaty Sadaty topping betting at $3.90.
