Autumn Storm sweating on scratchings at Sandown races

Autumn Storm is racing the clock – and the scratchings – to earn a start at Sandown this Wednesday, with trainer Robbie Griffiths hopeful his galloper gets the green light in the Stow Storage Solutions Handicap (1400m).

The promising son of The Autumn Sun is currently third emergency and drawn in barrier 16, but Griffiths remains optimistic about his chances of getting a run and kicking off a planned winter campaign.

“He’s ready to go and needs to get started so we can aim for an 1800m race soon, then a 2000m event at Flemington,” Griffiths told RSN. “It’s frustrating being caught wide in the draw again but we’re ready if the chance comes.”

Autumn Storm last ran at Moonee Valley in December, finishing runner-up to Son Of Solly with a strong closing effort. Griffiths said he’s looking for similar signs this time around as the horse builds fitness.

“He’s more of a follow-up horse, so third-up at Flemington over a trip will be the time to really watch him,” he said. “Still, it would be great to get the campaign rolling here.”

Stablemate Divino Cavallo, successful last start at Seymour, also lines up in the MRC Membership Feel The Thrill Handicap (1300m), with Griffiths confident she can handle softer conditions once again.

“I wasn’t sure how she’d go with the give in the ground last start, but she really thrived,” Griffiths said. “We’re happy to see similar conditions again.”

The Lakeside track was rated a Soft 6 on Tuesday, with rainfall expected to continue leading into race day.
