Repossession’s carnival credentials get winter test in Beaufine Stakes
Saturday’s Listed Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Pinjarra gives lightly-raced sprinter Repossession a chance to stamp himself as a serious spring contender.
The three-year-old will be guided by Brad Parnham and brings a perfect two-from-two record into the race this preparation, having recently claimed victory over Magnique and Art Session at the same venue.
Co-trainer Chris Gangemi is excited by what the gelding might achieve with just six career starts under his belt.
“He’s only had the six starts, so he’s got to this level quite quickly,” Gangemi told Racing WA Thoroughbreds.
“If he happens to win this week, then that would get his rating up nicely for later in the year.
“We’re pretty confident he will end up in open class.
“He’s matched it with the good horses and produced the work of a good horse all along.”
Repossession’s two unplaced runs were both in strong company – the Max Simmonds Stakes and Placid Ark Stakes.
This campaign has had a minor disruption with a hoof abscess, but Gangemi remains optimistic.
“He’s had four weeks between runs and had a hoof abscess last week, so it hasn’t been the ideal prep,” he explained.
“He only missed three days with the abscess, which came on Friday.
“He worked well yesterday, and Brad was happy with him.
“We would’ve liked a problem free prep, but hopefully he will still be good enough.”
Stablemate Phanta resumes after a break, having last raced in the Eurythmic Stakes, and could thrive on a wet track.
“He’s had a really good preparation,” Gangemi said.
“He’s working well and trialled really nicely.
“It’s pretty simple with him that he’s no hope if the track isn’t wet.
“He’s got three or four races at this time of the year where he has a chance to win one.”
Repossession holds $2.30 favouritism, while Phanta is a $12 chance in early markets. Earth God is also expected to run well in his second appearance for the stable.
