Prix De Turn gets a second chance

Prix De Turn is back in action after more than a year off, returning in Saturday’s Sportsbet Race Replays Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield after what was expected to be a permanent retirement.

The Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes winner has been plagued by soundness issues throughout his career, which includes a Group 1 Caulfield Guineas run behind Anamoe in 2021.

Trainer Matthew Brown admitted he had accepted the gelding's career was over before noticing a change in his condition months after being paddock-bound.

"He was set to go to someone as a show horse, but he never left. We checked him recently and he looked great, so we thought we’d try again," Brown said.

Prix De Turn has since participated in two jump-outs and will carry a light weight of 50kg with apprentice Rose Hammond aboard.

Brown says the horse’s mental freshness and physical improvement give him reason to believe there's still potential left.

"He seems happy again. If he shows a will to race, we’ll keep going. If not, we’ll look at other options, maybe even Tasmania," he said.
