Well-related three-year-old wins again at Randwick races

King’s Secret capped a remarkable run of form with a determined win in the Petaluma Handicap (1100m) at Randwick, a result that also earned him the BOBS Horse of the Year accolade.

Under jockey Andrew Adkins, the three-year-old gelding claimed his fourth win of the campaign, edging out Stardeel ($3.90 favourite) in a strong finish.

A sibling to G1 performer Private Eye, King’s Secret has built a formidable record in just a few short months, prompting praise from both his rider and the stable.

“He’s really come of age,” said Adkins. “Joe Pride and the team have done a terrific job developing him and I’ve been lucky to be on him every step of the way.”

Adkins noted a sharper attitude and willingness to compete this time out, describing the gelding as more mentally switched on than earlier in the prep.

“He used to get worked up before races but today he was calm, professional — the type of horse you want to stick with,” he added.

With Joe Pride overseeing stable duties in Melbourne, assistant trainer Orla Pearl spoke post-race and credited Adkins’ horsemanship and patience.

“Andrew’s decision to ride his own race, rather than chase others, was key. This horse thrives when given the space to build into his runs,” Pearl explained.

It’s the second consecutive season the Pride stable has claimed the BOBS Horse of the Year, following last year’s winner In Flight.

“It’s a great initiative and shows the value of nurturing good young stock,” Pearl added.
