Trainer maps plan for Melbourne Cup 2025 hope Deakin

With a guaranteed start in the Melbourne Cup, trainer Phillip Stokes is quietly optimistic that stayer Deakin can make a serious impact this spring.

The Irish import has already stamped his credentials with victory in the Roy Higgins (2600m) and is being set for a traditional Cup campaign, kicking off with the Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

"He had eight weeks in the paddock and has come back in great shape," Stokes said. "He did everything in one prep last time which is rare, and it shows how tough he is."

From there, Deakin is scheduled to contest the Makybe Diva Stakes, the Turnbull Stakes and the Caulfield Cup en route to the Flemington feature.

"He might be too brilliant for the 3200m, but he’s certainly more talented than horses like Daqiansweet Junior and Amade, who were genuine Cup runners," Stokes said. "We’ll learn a lot through the spring."

Deakin’s maiden Australian campaign saw him score three wins from six starts and now Stokes is hoping for further progression in his second preparation.

"I had a horse called Aesop who was moderate first-up but lifted dramatically in his second prep. That could be Deakin too," he said.

"He had a winter coat through summer last time. Now he’s stronger and healthier – and we’ve mapped out a path that has worked well historically."

While Stokes isn’t rushing to label Deakin a Cup winner just yet, there’s no doubt he’s excited about what lies ahead.
