Figures reveal racing’s boost to SA economy

Thoroughbred racing in South Australia continues to make a significant economic impact, with a new report revealing it contributed $515.4 million to the state economy in FY2024.

That figure marks a 14.2% increase over the previous year and reflects the growing importance of the sport, which now supports 3,462 full-time equivalent roles throughout the state.

According to the IER study, more than 11,800 people were engaged with the industry during the reporting period, including workers, volunteers, and other participants.

The popularity of racing events also remained strong, with 163,000 patrons attending 183 race meetings held across the state during the 12 months.

Local economies benefited through accommodation bookings, restaurant patronage, transport services, and other forms of spending related to raceday travel and tourism.

More than 500 horses received drought relief assistance, while Racing SA’s Thorough Care initiative delivered over 1,100 care packages to former racehorses transitioning to new lives.

Racing SA Chair Rob Rorrison said the industry’s continued growth highlights its economic and social value.

“The numbers speak volumes—not only are we seeing robust economic gains, but also stronger community engagement and regional development,” Rorrison said.

“With major initiatives like our Sportsbet sponsorship and increased prize pools, the next chapter promises even more growth and opportunity for everyone involved.”
