Secret out to show his class at Flemington

Bold Secret is set to debut at Flemington this Saturday, and for Phillip Stokes, it’s more than just another race – it’s a continuation of a long-running association with a cherished bloodline.

The VRC Member Sarah Hart Trophy will mark the first raceday appearance for the Brazen Beau colt, who has impressed with three Pakenham jump-out wins, most recently on July 8.

His dam, Private Nancy, is a daughter of Nancy Eleanor – a mare that gave Stokes his early stakes breakthrough in the Adelaide Guineas. That family also produced Group 1 Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready.

“Nancy Eleanor was one of my first top horses,” Stokes recalled. “The Broad family owned her and have stayed loyal ever since. It’s great to now be training her grandson.”

Bold Secret would have been sold to Hong Kong if not for a failed vet inspection, and Stokes is now thankful to retain the promising three-year-old.

“We kept him and I’m glad. He’s shown potential and we’ve kept him relaxed in trials. This debut will help shape his spring plans,” Stokes said.

Craig Williams will ride Bold Secret, who faces nine rivals including topweight Shining Smile, who carries 62.5kg but gets relief with Logan Bates aboard.

First Settler won this race last year and later claimed the Group 2 Danehill Stakes, highlighting the spring potential for debut winners.
