Jeff Dunn celebrates breakthrough stakes success in 2025 Ramornie Handicap

Jeff Dunn’s journey from show-ring stunt rider to stakes‑winning racehorse trainer reached a new peak when Sha Of Gomer powered to victory in the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.
The former Australian Outback Spectacular performer has been training a small team in recent seasons, and Wednesday’s feature country sprint delivered his first taste of black‑type success.
Ridden with perfect patience by Dunn’s wife, Rikki Jamieson, Sha Of Gomer ($10) tracked the leaders, peeled out and sprinted hard to put 1-1/4 lengths on Compelling Truth ($4 betting fav), with Barber ($6) half a length back in third.
Securing a Ramornie Handicap (1200m) win is an achievement in any trainer’s book, but for Dunn, having Jamieson in the irons made it irreplaceable.
“This would have been great for me but I will never surpass this in my career now because Rikki was on,” Dunn told Sky Racing.
He kept the emotions in check until the result was sealed—past experience has taught him caution.
“I’ve had a few early crow moments in my time and I didn’t want to do that in a big race,” he said.
“The way he was travelling leading into the corner, I was getting up out of my seat. Halfway down the straight I stood a bit taller and by the winning post I was jumping up and down.”
The Grafton win helped make up for a frustrating near miss in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich two starts earlier. Dunn says that defeat—early in the horse’s time with the stable—proved educational.
“Having that run taught us a lot about the horse and how long his turn of foot lasts,” Dunn said
“Had we not had that run we might not have been able to win the last two.”
For Jamieson, the Ramornie was a long‑awaited second Listed triumph, ending an 11‑year stakes drought dating back to her 2014 success in The Phoenix at Eagle Farm on Lucky Tom.
“Doing it with Jeff makes it better for me,” Jamieson said.
“I’ve had a bit of a career myself and he is just beginning. He just needs a few more decent horses to pick him up because he trains so well and we work really well as a team.”
Sha Of Gomer’s record since joining Dunn in April now reads three wins from six starts—and two on the trot.
