Bootlegger more than a sneaky chance in the SA Sires’ Produce Stakes 2025

Feature race trainer Dan Clarken will saddle up another promising youngster this Saturday, with Bootlegger stepping out in the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Clarken and co-trainer Oopy McGillivray have already had success with Steel Trap this season and hope to repeat the dose with Bootlegger, a son of Too Darn Hot who impressed when breaking his maiden at Gawler.

“He’s pulled up terrific and really benefited from that run,” Clarken said. “He’s put on weight, and that race has toughened him up.”

“His coat still has some improving to do, which tells us he’s got more development in him.”

Clarken believes the Sires’ Produce presents a winnable opportunity. “There’s no standout in the field, so I’m happy to be there. He’s adaptable and can settle where needed.”

Bootlegger wasn’t ready to race as early as some others, including stablemate Steel Trap, but Clarken has long held faith in his ability. “We thought he might come early but he needed time—just kept going shin sore,” he said.

“Now that he’s strengthened up, we’re starting to see what he’s capable of. He’s a bit different in style to Steel Trap, but he’s got talent.”

Clarken added, “You just let the two-year-olds tell you when they’re ready. He’s earned his shot here.”
