2025 Victoria Derby run secured for Arcora
Promising colt Arcora stamped himself as a genuine spring contender by winning the Byerley Handicap (1800m) at Flemington on Saturday, earning a ballot-free pass into the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
Trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, and piloted by John Allen, Arcora ($4.20 fav) held off Bayou Music ($5) by a long head, with Arabian Prince ($8.50) close up in third.
“It’s nice to tick the box and it will do him the world of good to get his head in front,” said the stable’s racing manager Sam Griggs. “He’s got plenty more to offer and has always shaped as a Derby horse.”
Allen rode Arcora conservatively, mindful of the colt’s tendency to switch off if he hits the front too early. “He had more to give and held them comfortably,” said Griggs.
Arcora will now be guided through traditional staying lead-ups as he prepares for his Derby tilt in November.
