Thompson to let Secret out at Randwick races

Posted by RS NewsWire at 2:23pm on July 24th

Trainer John Thompson has confirmed that exciting juvenile Bel Merci, winner of the Gimcrack Stakes, will not be part of this year’s spring carnival after suffering a virus and foot issues during her break.

“She went to the paddock and had a virus and feet issues so she is out for an extended break,” Thompson said. “She’ll miss the spring.”

With Bel Merci sidelined, Thompson is placing his faith in another talented filly, Open Secret, who resumes in Saturday’s Keenland September Yearling Sale Handicap (1100m) at Randwick.

A debut winner at Randwick in January, Open Secret has been well-supported in early markets, with her odds shortening from $15 to $10. She brings strong form lines from her initial campaign, including close-up finishes in the Inglis Millennium and Sweet Embrace Stakes, and was spelled after contesting the Magic Night Stakes.

“She won well first-up (last time in) and I think it just took the edge off her,” Thompson said. “She’s come back stronger and looks better for the experience.”

Open Secret will be tested against a competitive field that includes stakes winner Shaggy, Gosford debut star Nazwah, and exciting colt Nashville Jack. It’s the final metro two-year-old race before the new season officially kicks off.
