Nashville Jack on song in return at Randwick races

Promising colt Nashville Jack made the perfect start to his spring preparation with a dominant victory in the Keenland September Yearling Sale Handicap (1100m) at Randwick, with the Listed Rosebud (1100m) at Rosehill now firmly on the radar.

Trained by Brad Widdup, Nashville Jack had shown ability as a juvenile with strong runs in the Silver Slipper Stakes and Black Opal Stakes. After two sharp trials, Widdup was pleased to see the colt put it all together when it counted.

“He’s always been a nice horse, and today’s win was very satisfying,” Widdup said. “His effort in the Black Opal was huge considering the mishap he had with his shoe. We weren’t sure whether to run him today or wait for midweek, but it worked out perfectly.”

Given a patient ride by Jason Collett, Nashville Jack ($4.60) settled midfield before unleashing a strong burst along the inside to win by two lengths over Hello Romeo ($13). Outsider Wisnierska ($81) charged late to claim third, while favourite Nazwah ($1.90) weakened after leading until the final stages.

“The Rosebud looks a logical next step,” Widdup said. “There are some lovely options for him later in spring, but we’ll take it race by race.”

Collett, who partnered the colt for the first time, was equally impressed. “He’s a strong, quality type and travelled well throughout. Once he balanced up, he put the race away quickly,” he said.

Bred by Golden Slipper winner Farnan, Nashville Jack was purchased for $225,000 at the Inglis Easter Sale and carries the colours of new Everest slot holders Mulberry, giving connections plenty to look forward to this spring.
