One late bid for talented Fortunate Kiss

The curtain could come down on the racing career of Fortunate Kiss when she lines up at Flemington on Saturday. The Lloyd Kennewell-trained mare will contest the Victorian Jockeys’ Association Trophy (1410m) before going under the virtual hammer at next week’s Magic Millions Virtual Sale.

Bought by Kennewell’s clients last year, Fortunate Kiss has delivered on her price tag, winning the Listed Glasshouse Handicap in July and finishing second in the Listed Wangoom Handicap earlier in the year. Officially turning seven on Friday, she is poised to begin a stud career in the new breeding season. “She’s had a really good prep,” Kennewell said. “She’s been at the beach, came back to the stable on Tuesday, had a nice gallop Wednesday, and is in good order. This race looks ideal for her. Potentially, it could be her last start, but we’ll decide after Saturday’s run.”

Kennewell highlighted her consistency across a taxing interstate campaign. “She was impressive in the Glasshouse and ran well in Sydney last start despite being taken out of the race early,” he said. “The 1400 metres will be ideal for her. She’s fresh and happy despite having travelled a lot this preparation.”

Fortunate Kiss has been accompanied by the same handler throughout her campaign, which Kennewell said has helped keep her in top condition. “She’s been really well looked after despite all the travel,” he said. “She’s been a great mare for us, and now she’s a valuable broodmare having secured that Stakes win. Whether this is her last start or not, she’ll definitely be heading to stud this season.”
