Nic out to be Bossy in the 2025 Aurie’s Star Handicap
The McEvoy stable are expecting Bossy Nic to perform strongly when she resumes in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday. The five-year-old mare has an excellent straight-track record and has proven herself over the distance with two wins and a placing from four runs.
Bossy Nic rose to prominence when she captured the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes as a two-year-old, and racing manager Rayan Moore believes the set-up on Saturday is perfect. “She’s got a really good straight-track record and is effective on softer ground,” Moore said. “She’s had one trial on the synthetic this prep, goes in fresh, and the blinkers go back on, which is when she’s at her best.”
Moore says that while Bossy Nic has faced tough competition in the past, this race is an ideal kick-off point. “She’s rated 88, and while there are a few quality horses like Joyful Fortune, Marble Nine, and Lady In Pink, this year’s edition has a bit of a tail, so it’s a great starting race. Longer-term, we’re aiming to pick off some more Black Type races.”
After contesting feature races early in her career, Bossy Nic found winning form again last preparation in a Benchmark 90 race. Moore believes she is now more mature and ready to step back up. “She showed her best when she found soft ground, and even on firm tracks, her runs were strong. She ran behind A Little Deep last start, who finished fourth in The Goodwood. Based on that form, she deserves plenty of respect. We think she’s in for a really good campaign.”
