Yulong cast-off delivers milestone win for young trainer at Rosehill races

Central Coast horsewoman Denim Wynen experienced a career milestone on Saturday, landing her first metropolitan winner with Sunshine Law at Rosehill.

The 29-year-old trainer had only saddled a few runners in Sydney previously but had high hopes for the mare based on her trackwork.

“I’m so stoked,” Wynen said.

“My trackwork rider said the first gallop she did on her that she thinks she is quite a serious horse, so for her to say that, I thought, I’ve got a nice horse.”

Previously trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald, Sunshine Law was bought for $85,000 online and was having her first run for Wynen.

With just six horses in her stable, Wynen was thrilled to prepare a city winner so early in the new season.

“I still can’t believe it’s true,” she said.

“They (owners) actually rang me the day before and said they were looking at a couple of tried horses online.

“They’ve been a big support to my stable over the last six months. They’ve bought some weanlings and they wanted to get to the races sooner, so they decided to go to the tried sales and picked up two nice horses from Yulong.

“I think we’re going to have some fun with her.”

Wynen began by training a few of her own horses as a hobby before taking on clients two years ago. She credited Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan for playing a major role in her development.

“I didn’t want to go to school anymore when I was fourteen. My brother was working with horses and my mum said if I got a job I was allowed to leave school,” she said.

“I went and worked for Kristen Buchanan. She took me in and she was like a mum to me and that’s where I’ve been since.”

Sunshine Law ($4.80 in betting) made it a winning double for apprentice Anna Roper, claiming the Congratulations James McDonald Handicap (1400m) by half a length ahead of Super Norwest ($7), with Pippie Beach ($4) in third place.
