Mr Brightside set for return in the Memsie Stakes 2025
Ben Hayes is confident that stable star Mr Brightside can bounce back from his disappointing Hong Kong run and reassert himself as one of the top gallopers this spring.
The eight-year-old gelding had his first public trial of the campaign on Monday, finishing fourth in an 800m jumpout at Flemington, a low-pressure outing on his way to a first-up run in the Memsie Stakes on August 30 at Caulfield.
"He’s been his usual self and his preparation has been smooth," said Hayes.
"His coat looks great, probably better than last year due to his time overseas. He’s sound, healthy and looks super."
Mr Brightside's most recent start was a last-place finish in the Group 1 Champions Mile in Hong Kong, a result that stands out among an otherwise stellar record that includes consistent Group 1 performances and wins.
"We went into that race fresh and unfortunately it didn’t work out. But you see horses like Docklands and Antino who ran poorly in Hong Kong and came back to win at Group level in Australia and the UK," Hayes said.
"There’s no reason why Mr Brightside can’t bounce back in similar fashion."
Monday’s jumpout saw him track behind Evaporate, who was given a stronger gallop, as Hayes focused on keeping his star fresh and ready to peak in his targeted Group 1 assignments.
The gelding will have one more jumpout on August 15 before stepping out in the Memsie Stakes, where he is expected to attract plenty of support from punters.
