Stars horses don’t disappoint at barrier trials at Randwick

Posted by RS NewsWire at 8:35pm on August 7th

The stars were out in force at Thursday’s Randwick trials, where Cox Plate winner Via Sistina showed she's ready for another big spring, finishing a strong second to Vauban in a 1000m trial on heavy ground.

With James McDonald in the saddle, Via Sistina travelled smoothly under a tight hold, while stablemate Fangirl also produced an encouraging performance to finish fourth in the same heat.

Both mares are expected to kick off their campaigns in the Winx Stakes (1400m) on August 23, along with promising stablemates Lady Shenandoah and Aeliana, who also trialled with merit in a separate session over 1000m.

Vauban, who holds equal favouritism for the Melbourne Cup, made his seasonal return in this trial and is expected to resume racing in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick next month.

“He seems in good shape. He will have a couple of trials and then we’ll see him resume most likely in a race like the Chelmsford,” said Adrian Bott.

“I feel he’s in for a good campaign. He’s had that bit longer to acclimatise down here. He’s in off the back of a nice break and he had a positive racing campaign last time in and has improved nicely for it.”

Among other notable efforts, unbeaten mare Autumn Glow and Randwick Guineas winner Linebacker looked solid in their 850m hit-out, while Doncaster Mile winner Stefi Magnetica ran fourth in her trial behind Manaal.

Over at Gosford, Ciaron Maher sent several of his Group performers to trial, including Gringotts, Another Wil and Light Infantry Man, who completed their respective 1000m workouts. The Everest-bound Jimmysstar produced a late burst for third in his 800m hit-out.

Attention now turns to Friday’s trials at Warwick Farm, where Ceolwulf is the standout entry. Trainer Joe Pride will also decide whether Missile Stakes hopeful Private Eye steps out in the trials or waits for improved conditions.
