2025 Missile Stakes meeting at Randwick postponed

Persistent rain has washed out Randwick’s ten-race program on Saturday, forcing the abandonment of the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) and other events after the track was deemed unsafe.

The Sydney course received close to 215mm of rain across the week, including 45mm overnight. Conditions deteriorated from a heavy 8 to a heavy 10 on the morning of the meeting.

Although there was some optimism racing could go ahead, Racing NSW chief steward Tom Moxon confirmed the final inspection at 7:30am (AEST) left no choice but to cancel.

“A track gallop just before six showed it was already at the limit,” Moxon said on Sky Racing Radio. “Once that extra rain arrived, it simply wasn’t possible to proceed safely.”

He said any improvement required to race was unlikely given the wet forecast for the remainder of the day.

Racing NSW and Australian Turf Club officials will discuss alternative arrangements for the Missile Stakes in the coming days.

“We’ll make sure plans are in place for the race to be run,” Moxon said.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting the wet weather will persist in Sydney until mid-next week, with further heavy rain likely in the coming days.
