Zaaki’s brother breaks through at Bairnsdale
Trainer Annabel Archibald enjoyed a sentimental victory at Bairnsdale on Tuesday when Kaazi, a half-brother to her former stable star Zaaki, broke through for his first win.
Kaazi, by Study Of Man from the Sadler’s Wells mare Kesara, is closely related to the multiple Group 1-winning gelding Zaaki, who became a flagship horse for Archibald – then known as Annabel Neasham – early in her career. Zaaki’s resume features wins in the Champions Stakes, All-Star Mile, Doomben Cup and Underwood Stakes.
On just his second raceday appearance, Kaazi bounced back from an unplaced debut over 1300m at Sandown to score at $5.50, defeating favourite Blanche Bass ($2.70) by three-quarters of a length.
Jockey Daniel Moor praised the grey’s finishing burst, noting, “He’s still raw but has a lot of potential. This win gives us a good base to map out his preparation from here.”
Bred in the UK, Kaazi was purchased in partnership with English agent Stuart Boman for 100,000 guineas ($217,000) at the 2023 October Yearling Sale at Tattersalls. While only two of Kesara’s progeny – Zaaki and Kaazi – have raced in Australia, the mare has produced multiple winners overseas.
