Match fit colt ready for Grand test in 2025 The Rosebud

Posted by RS NewsWire at 4:18pm on August 13th

Peter Snowden has plotted Grand Prairie’s path to The Rosebud with precision, ensuring the colt arrives third-up and race-fit for Saturday’s Listed event.

Four of his five rivals are first-up, including $2.50 favourite Pallaton and $3.90 second elect Skyhook, while Grand Prairie ($7.50) benefits from two recent runs.

Snowden revealed the plan was always to have a fitness edge early in the season, particularly if the track turned out rain-affected.

“That was the idea. We wanted to have a bit of fitness on our side leading into those better class races because sometimes you can be the fitter horse, not the best horse, to get one of those races nice and early,” Snowden said.

“I’m banking on his fitness being a key factor to his chances on Saturday.

“It’s a Listed race so it would be nice if he could get that one up.”

The Yulong-owned colt resumed with a gritty midweek Kensington win before placing second to Stardeel on a heavy Rosehill track earlier this month.

With the drop in trip to 1100m and barrier three, Snowden expects a competitive showing.

Though not in the same league as stablemates Beadman and Raging Force, he sees untapped potential in Grand Prairie.

“He’s not that class but he’s an improving horse,” he said.

“He’s got a great mindset, he’s great to work with and those sort of horses, while they’re improving, it’s hard to say how far they’re going to go.”

Following the Missile Stakes washout, the Rosebud will be the first stakes race of Sydney’s new season, leading into the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month.

Early scratching of Shaggy has reduced the field to six runners.
