Saltcoats snares rescheduled 2025 Premier’s Cup Prelude

Saltcoats produced a polished performance to capture the Premier’s Cup Prelude at Kensington, rewarding his owners after the race was pushed back from Randwick’s abandoned meeting on Saturday. The 1800m event was the only one shifted from the original 10-race program to the midweek fixture.
Darren Beadman, representing trainer Chris Waller, said the decision to proceed with the Prelude was key for horses targeting longer spring races.
“It was really important these types of horses were able to get the mileage in their legs, given they’re going to get over a bit of ground,” Beadman said.
“You could run them in a barrier trial over 1200 but they’re not going to get the same benefit.”
Backed into $2.60 favouritism, Saltcoats was having his third run of the campaign after finishing third to Robusto in the Winter Challenge (1500m) on July 19. He appreciated the extra ground, finding a gap along the inside in the straight to defeat Glory Daze ($2.90) by 2-1/4 lengths, with Salt Lake City ($7.50) running third.
Beadman indicated the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday week was next on the agenda.
“That looks the logical step for him and right progression,” he said.
The meeting also saw 22-year-old apprentice Siena Grima record her first metropolitan win aboard Tazima in the Exceedance @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1800m) for Waller. Travelling from Tamworth for just one ride following the scratching of More Felons from the Premier’s Cup Prelude, she was thrilled with the milestone.
“I’m more than happy to do it to get my name out and around in the metro area and for the bigger trainers to see me and see what I can hopefully accomplish on their horses too,” she said.
Waller capped the day with four winners, courtesy of Tazima, Saltcoats, Sixties, and Narbold.
