Fangirl gets first look at Caulfield ahead of 2025 Memsie Stakes

Fangirl will finally begin her spring preparation in Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes, with Chris Waller making a special trip to Caulfield to monitor her trackwork.

The mare bypassed last week’s Winx Stakes due to the heavy Randwick surface and travelled to Melbourne that night. Tuesday marked her first gallop at Caulfield, and Waller was reassured by what he saw. “She’s a sweet girl, nothing fazes her, and on race day she just explodes,” Waller said. “If she gets around Caulfield, she’ll be very exciting to watch.”

Under race jockey Mark Zahra, Fangirl completed a smooth piece of work beside stablemate Moira. Waller noted she appeared settled and race-fit, adding, “She was ready to run last week. She’s travelled down well and had a good look this morning. I think she has the right profile for Caulfield.”

While Fangirl’s presence is locked in, Waller is still weighing up whether to also start Moira, Anisette or Buckaroo. Moira could instead resume in the So You Think Stakes en route to the Underwood Stakes, while Buckaroo may wait for the Group 2 Tramway Stakes in Sydney.

“It’s a tough year to run in the Memsie, but with the right luck, she’s good enough to win,” Waller said.
