European stayer Al Riffa eyes the 2025 Melbourne Cup
European star Al Riffa will spearhead Joseph O’Brien’s bid for a third Melbourne Cup after being purchased by Australian Bloodstock to target this year’s race.
The powerful stayer, fresh off his Group 2 Curragh Cup triumph in July, will travel to Melbourne in the second shipment of international contenders. He will first contest the Irish St Leger on September 14 as his final lead-up assignment.
Jamie Lovett of Australian Bloodstock confirmed that O’Brien, who previously struck Cup glory with Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020), will continue to train Al Riffa. “He’s been a horse with a strong profile, and his last win put the flashing light on him as a top Cup prospect,” Lovett said. “Two miles should suit him perfectly.”
The connections have made it clear the Melbourne Cup is only the start. Once his Australian mission concludes, Al Riffa is set to travel on to Hong Kong in December and Dubai in March, ensuring a truly international campaign. “The ownership group spans across Europe, Dubai and Australia,” Lovett said. “It’s not just about running in the Cup, it’s about winning it, then travelling the world with him.”
Al Riffa adds even greater depth to the Spring Carnival and will be among the most closely watched internationals. Punters can already back him in the Melbourne Cup with odds available at major betting sites.
