Pericles poised for 2025 Tramway Stakes resumption
While Doncaster Mile winner Stefi Magnetica is still building towards her spring return, stablemate Pericles is on the verge of stepping out in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes.
Bjorn Baker, who now trains the talented gelding after Godolphin’s move to public training, praised his credentials. “He is the best credentialled horse I’ve had join the stable as a tried runner and it’s exciting,” Baker said. “The Tramway won’t be easy, but the conditions of the race suit him.”
Pericles, last seen finishing fifth in the Doncaster, claimed the Tramway Stakes in 2023. On Wednesday he and Stefi Magnetica had a public gallop at Randwick over 1000m, with Pericles leading under Josh Parr and holding off his barn mate by a length. Baker said both horses came through the workout well.
Stefi Magnetica is slated to resume in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) before a tilt at the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes. The mare could also back up into the Group 1 Cox Plate a week later, similar to last spring when she competed in both the Golden Eagle and Cantala Stakes on consecutive weekends.
“It’s not out of the question. She has shown she can handle a quick turnaround,” Baker said.
