The Pendragon makes return at The Valley in the 2025 Chautauqua Stakes
Former New Zealand star The Pendragon is set to begin a new chapter when he resumes in the Listed Chautauqua Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday, his first start for Lindsay Park.
The gelding was previously prepared by the late Mike Moroney, who was adamant the horse had the ability to succeed in Australia. A Group 2 winner at home and runner-up to Orchestral in the Karaka Millions, The Pendragon was tested in the Group 1 Australian Guineas earlier this year but struggled after a taxing campaign.
Brought back for a spring preparation, he failed to find his best and was turned out before being transferred to Ben, Will and J D Hayes following Moroney’s passing. Ben Hayes says the team has been pleased with his progress ahead of his fresh run.
“He’s shown us nice ability at home and has been working well at Pakenham,” Hayes said. “He’s got speed, and 1200 metres looks a good place to start him. With a small field he’ll get his chance to settle and finish off strongly.”
The Pendragon boasts strong form in New Zealand, having twice beaten Quintessa and finished close behind Orchestral, winner of both the New Zealand Derby and Vinery Stud Stakes. Connections hope he can now translate that ability on Australian soil.
