Headwall stakes The Everest claims in Concorde Stakes
Headwall has thrown his name firmly into Everest discussions with a determined victory in Saturday’s Concorde Stakes at Randwick, though Lady Shenandoah’s fast-finishing second almost stole the spotlight.
Trainer Matt Smith was delighted to see his stable star return with a win after Group 1 placings last campaign. Held up at the rear, Headwall unleashed a blistering burst when Zac Lloyd found clear air in the straight, grabbing Lady Shenandoah in the final strides. “It’s always hard to get into the Everest, but the timing couldn’t be better for this horse,” Smith said. “He’s had a smooth preparation and today proved he’s on track.”
Headwall ($4.20) scored narrowly from Lady Shenandoah ($2.60 fav), who charged late after being denied room, while longshot Ostraka ($31) ran into third. Waller’s decision to test Lady Shenandoah at sprint distances was justified, with McDonald labelling her run “gallant in defeat.”
Markets adjusted quickly, Headwall shortening to $26 for the $20 million The Everest (1200m) and Lady Shenandoah to $8. Ka Ying Rising remains a firm $1.80 favourite. Jimmysstar, another confirmed Everest runner, finished fifth, but jockey Ethan Brown said the effort was full of promise. “The trip was short for him, he hit a flat spot, but his last fifty metres were spot on,” Brown said. “He’s right where we want him.”
