Another Wil on track for 2025 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
Another Wil is on track for redemption at Caulfield with trainer Ciaron Maher reporting the gelding has made significant improvement since his first-up run in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
The six-year-old finished sixth behind Treasurethe Moment on August 30, a result that underlined his lack of race fitness. On Saturday he steps out in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m), where he was runner-up last year and now faces the challenge of carrying topweight of 59kg.
Maher said Tuesday’s gallop at Caulfield with regular rider Jamie Kah in the saddle showed the horse had tightened up considerably.
“His work has been excellent,” Maher said. “Jamie came back and said it felt much more like the horse we know. He’s fitter, sharper, and I think the run has really brought him on.”
Maher pointed to Another Wil’s previous success at the Caulfield 1400m, notably his win in the Group 1 C F Orr Stakes, but admitted this year’s Sir Rupert Clarke will be a strong test. Chief among the opposition is Angel Capital from Chris Waller’s stable, who carries just 53.5kg and caught the eye in a solo gallop on Tuesday with Damian Lane aboard.
“He’s got the weight to contend with, but he’s improved, and that’s the main thing,” Maher said. “It should be a great contest, and we’re confident he’s going there in good order.”
