Sir Delius out to press Spring Carnival claims in 2025 Underwood Stakes
The Waterhouse-Bott stable is banking on imported runner Sir Delius to deliver a third Underwood Stakes title in four years when the 1800m Group 1 is run at Caulfield this Saturday.
The powerhouse yard previously struck gold with Alligator Blood in 2022 and 2023, but were absent from last year’s edition when Chris Waller’s Buckaroo was victorious. This year Buckaroo is back as a $5 chance, chasing another trophy, but Sir Delius holds favouritism at $2.
Sir Delius was a star in France, unbeaten in his first three outings before finishing eighth in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Since being purchased by Sir Owen Glenn and connections, he has already stamped his class in Australia with a Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap win in Brisbane before running second in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).
“He went down to Melbourne not long after his run up here and he seems in good shape,” Bott said. “He should appreciate getting out that little bit further in distance again. I’d like to think he will show some nice improvement off that first-up run.”
The stallion’s campaign is set to continue through the Group 1 Might And Power (2000m) into the Cox Plate (2040m), with a berth in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) firmly on the radar.
