Estremo chases a Waller first in the 2025 Caulfield Guineas Prelude
Estremo will represent Chris Waller in Saturday’s Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m), as the leading trainer attempts to secure his first win in the race.
While the Prelude is not usually part of Waller’s path to the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), he has enjoyed past Guineas success with Press Statement and The Autumn Sun. Last year’s winner, Private Life, ran fourth in the Prelude before claiming the Guineas at double-figure odds.
Estremo has been based in Melbourne for much of his preparation, having placed third behind Space Rider at Moonee Valley on August 23 and finishing fifth to Rosberg on September 6. Both runs were over 1200m, and Waller believes stepping up to 1400m will suit the lightly raced colt.
“I probably made a mistake running him over too short a distance last time,” Waller admitted. “He was probably ready for 1400 metres last start, and he gets the 1400 metres this week. He’s had a couple of races running left-handed in Melbourne and he’s been running well, so he’ll get his chance on Saturday.”
The son of Extreme Choice had a track gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday to familiarise himself with the circuit ahead of his fifth career outing. Ben Melham has been booked to take the ride.
