Half Yours announces himself as a Caulfield Cup 2025 contender
Half Yours has secured his place in the Caulfield Cup with a runaway victory in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield.
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained gelding justified his $2.60 favouritism, surging away under Jamie Melham to score by 3-½ lengths over Berkshire Breeze ($12) with Grand Pierro ($71) grabbing third.
With a ballot exemption for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18 now in hand, Half Yours is set to remain in Melbourne for the rest of the spring.
“Dad and I tossed up what to do all week,” Calvin McEvoy said. “He was in Sydney for the Kingston Town, but we accepted here late and it’s worked out. He’s in the Cup now, he’s versatile, and we’ll press on.”
McEvoy explained the gelding was purchased online after being noticed by racing manager Rayan Moore. “We loved his profile and his rating. Ever since we’ve had him, he’s been straightforward, a lovely horse to train. He hasn’t hit his ceiling yet.”
The gelding had already proven his stamina with victory in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) over the winter and McEvoy is confident he’ll handle the Cup trip. “Another run won’t hurt him, but I feel he could go straight to a mile-and-a-half now. It’s bloody exciting for the whole team.”
