Hawkes colt fresh for 2025 Roman Consul Stakes test at Rosehill

Star three-year-old Gallo Nero resumes in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill as Hawkes Racing prepares him for a summer assault on the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).
The talented colt by Wootton Bassett is best remembered for defeating Apocalyptic at Randwick in December — the filly who has since swept the Princess Series and claimed Group 1 Flight Stakes honours. Gallo Nero’s juvenile season also featured placings in the Magic Millions and Champagne Classics before a wet-track miss in the BTC Sires’ Produce.
Co-trainer Michael Hawkes said Gallo Nero has returned from his spell a stronger, more mature horse. “He’s a beautiful colt and very easy to train,” Hawkes said. “He beat Apocalyptic fair and square as a two-year-old, and he’s come back in great order. He’s a gentle giant, great attitude, and ready to go.”
Despite facing race-fit rivals, Hawkes says the colt is forward enough to perform well first-up. “I’m pretty comfortable with where he’s at,” he said. “He’s done enough work and will improve as the prep goes on. He’s had a great trial and jump-out and is ready to show his class.”
Hawkes also has Gangsta Granny and Husk engaged in the Group 3 The Nivison (1200m). “Gangsta Granny’s in great shape after her Sheraco run, and Husk is racing well — she’s a nice lightweight chance,” he said.
The stable’s long-term plan is to progress Gallo Nero toward the Magic Millions Guineas on the Gold Coast. “It’s been the aim for a while,” Hawkes said. “This run will give us a guide on how to get there.”
