Globe scores 2025 Might And Power Stakes upset

Upsets are part of racing’s charm — and the $1 million Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield delivered one, as Globe ($8.50) outsmarted his more fancied rivals to claim a career-best win.

Blake Shinn executed a perfectly judged front-running ride on the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding, who dictated throughout and kicked clear for a commanding three-length victory. The $1.60 favourite Treasurethe Moment had to settle for second, with Buckaroo ($2.70) a further three-quarters of a length behind in third.

Connections had elected to stay in Melbourne rather than chase the Hill Stakes (1900m) in Sydney, and the decision paid off in style. “It was a heist, wasn’t it?” Price quipped. “But you know it’s a horse race, not a mathematical formula — that’s what makes it great.”

Price said Globe’s win was especially rewarding given his journey. “The Might And Power wasn’t on our radar early,” he said. “But small fields can be unpredictable — it was just one of those days where things fell our way.”

Shinn said Globe’s natural speed was the key. “We were a bit of an underdog, but in these tactical races you can turn the tables,” Shinn said. “We were the obvious leader, and Globe loves to roll along. It’s very satisfying to pull it off.”

Meanwhile, trainer Matt Laurie said Treasurethe Moment’s Cox Plate campaign remains undecided. “We’ll see how she pulls up,” Laurie said. “She’s a mare who likes a strong tempo and more runners. We’ve got two weeks to make the call.”
