Boy’s chance to become a Man in Spring Champion Stakes

Adrian Bott believes rising star Shangri La Boy can continue his extraordinary rise through the grades when he tackles the $2 million Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

The son of Pierro has raced just three times, debuting with a third at Canterbury five weeks ago before winning a Rosehill maiden and then impressively taking out the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m). That victory secured his start in the Spring Champion and confirmed him as one of the most exciting emerging three-year-olds in training.

“It’s been a rapid rise for him, but he’s handled it all really well,” Bott said. “He was excellent in the Gloaming, stepping up in both class and distance, and it was a dominant display. He’s come through the run in great order and keeps improving with every start.”

A half-brother to Magic Millions winner and Golden Slipper placegetter Storm Boy, Shangri La Boy is bred for class but shaped more as a stayer from an early stage. “He’s a very different horse to Storm Boy,” Bott said. “He’s much more of a staying type and should have no problem with the 2000 metres at Randwick.”

Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said the colt’s progression through the grades had been seamless. “He’s showing the right signs — relaxed, strong and very genuine. It’s another test for him, but he’s earned the chance,” he said.

The Spring Champion Stakes has attracted 18 entries, including Attica and Champagne Hero from Joe Pride’s yard. Bott noted Champagne Hero was unlucky in the Gloaming Stakes. “He just didn’t get the breaks last time,” he said. “With a clearer run, he could certainly be competitive again.”
