Globe going for 2025 Cox Plate glory
The fairy-tale story of Globe could take another dramatic turn this weekend, with the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained galloper confirmed for the $6 million Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Four weeks ago, Globe was beaten in a benchmark race, but his breakout win in the Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) — where he defeated Treasurethe Moment and Buckaroo — saw his connections pay a $200,000 late-entry fee to contest Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.
Price believes the timing couldn’t be better. “He’s ready to have a crack,” he said. “He’s fit, he’s sound, and he’s earned the chance to take on the best. With Sir Delius coming out, he’ll get his preferred role up on speed.”
The seven-year-old gelding will face a classy line-up including defending titleholder Via Sistina, Queensland star Antino, and the ever-consistent Aeliana. The wildcard remains Observer, with Godolphin yet to decide between a Cox Plate berth or the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase.
“I’m just keeping Globe at the same level — he’s had a few tough runs and doesn’t need to do more. We’re just maintaining him in top order,” Price said.
Ben Melham will take the ride on Saturday after Blake Shinn opted to partner Antino. “It’s great to have Ben on — he’s hungry and knows how to judge tempo,” Price added.
