Globe in doubt to line-up in 2025 Cox Plate
Globe’s dream of contesting the Cox Plate hangs in the balance after Racing Victoria vets identified an issue with his fetlock during a pre-race inspection this week.
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding, who cost his owners a $200,000 late-entry fee after winning the Might And Power Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield, was subjected to a Sleip motion test on Monday that revealed slight irregularities in his gait.
“He had to do a Sleip test yesterday, which is a video of their action,” Price told Racing.com. “RV contacted ‘Junior’ and said on half of the test the horse wouldn’t pass. I’ve contacted the owners and let them know.”
Globe, who has drawn barrier seven for the Cox Plate (2040m), has been sent to the beach to help settle the irritation in his off-front fetlock, with further vet inspections scheduled for later in the week.
“They’ll come Thursday or Friday, maybe even Saturday morning,” Price said. “The horse has irritation in the fetlock, and if he’s not 100 per cent, he won’t run. I’m not risking him.”
Price added that X-rays had cleared the gelding of any bone injury, pinpointing a soft tissue inflammation around the joint capsule instead. “It’s more soft tissue than anything serious, but if he’s not perfect, we’ll save him. He’s only had 15 starts and there’s plenty ahead of him.”
The trainer hinted that Globe could instead be aimed at a Sydney autumn campaign if he’s ruled out of Saturday’s race. “He’d be a beautiful horse for the Sydney carnival,” Price said. “He’s got the ability — we just need to look after him.”
