Globe scratched from the 2025 Cox Plate field
The $6 million Cox Plate (2040m) has lost one of its leading contenders, with Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr confirming the scratching of Globe on veterinary advice just two days before the race.
The powerful gelding had been monitored closely throughout the week after undergoing a Sleip Test on Monday, a technology-based motion assessment that detected a variation in his stride linked to irritation around the off-fore fetlock capsule. Subsequent inspections by Racing Victoria veterinarians on Thursday morning concluded the horse was lame and unsuitable to race.
“The horse was not 100% and the welfare of any horse comes before any race,” Price Kent Racing said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “He will be spelled and prepare for the autumn.”
The stable had paid a $200,000 late nomination fee to gain a start in this year’s Cox Plate following Globe’s commanding win in the Might And Power (2000m) at Caulfield earlier this month. However, connections agreed with Racing Victoria’s ruling, stressing that the welfare of the horse was the only priority.
The withdrawal leaves a field of eight for the famous Moonee Valley contest, a race already shaping as one of the most open renewals in recent memory. Globe will now head to the paddock before being set for a major autumn campaign targeting Group 1 staying races.
