Linebacker going for a touchdown in 2025 The Golden Eagle

The move to stage the $10 million Golden Eagle at Randwick instead of Rosehill brought mixed reactions, but for co-trainer Tom Charlton, the venue change is a major positive for his rising star Linebacker.

Charlton, in partnership with John O’Shea, prepares the Super Seth gelding, who has built an impressive record at Randwick — including his recent victory in the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m) and his Group 1 triumph in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) earlier in the year.

“His best form is at Randwick, he won the Randwick Guineas, which is not too dissimilar to the Golden Eagle, and obviously he won last start over 1300,” Charlton said. “Being at Randwick we’re very happy about and now we just need a few things to go our way.”

Linebacker is rated one of the biggest dangers to Autumn Glow — Chris Waller’s undefeated mare who heads the field of 17. Autumn Glow drew midfield, while Linebacker drew perfectly in barrier five. Japanese contender Panja Tower lines up from gate four.

Linebacker advertised his readiness when winning a Randwick trial on October 7, beating Overpass and Ka Ying Rising, before delivering a strong 2.5-length victory in the Silver Eagle on October 18. Charlton believes there is still improvement to come.

“He was a little bit fresh before the race, which was good to see, so there would be no doubt there should be a bit of improvement and getting to a trip where he should be most effective,” Charlton said.

“Everyone seems so happy with him at home and we’re looking for to it.”

Zac Lloyd, who has partnered Linebacker to his recent victories, retains the ride for Saturday’s feature.
