2025 Rosehill Gold Cup cash lures Wootton Verni home
Chris Waller has long believed Wootton Verni would develop into a quality middle-distance performer in Australia, but the leading trainer is taking his time with the former French galloper.
This weekend, Wootton Verni heads to the Rosehill Gold Cup, now run at Randwick, where he will attempt to claim his second victory of the preparation over 2000 metres.
The gelding was impressive in capturing the Group 3 Coongy Cup last start, enhancing his record to six wins from 15 appearances.
Waller said the prize money made the decision simple.
“There are 750,000 reasons why,” Waller said.
“He’s found form, but he’s still a year away from Melbourne Cups and things like that, so that was the reason.”
Wootton Verni’s European résumé includes a Group 3 victory and a Group 2 placing, and Waller said the gelding continues to improve as he adapts to Australian racing.
“Last start was certainly much better, but he’s still quite keen and aggressive.”
Damian Lane partnered him to victory at Caulfield, but this time James McDonald will ride as part of a four-runner Waller team that includes Imperialist, Mutasalem, and Scarlet Oak.
