Griffiths Bound for Legacy in the 2025 Coolmore Stud Stakes

Trainer Robbie Griffiths is ready for a familiar clash when Legacy Bound lines up against several recognisable rivals from the Danehill Stakes in Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington.

Legacy Bound produced a solid fourth in the Danehill Stakes (1100m), finishing behind McGaw, My Gladiola and Tentyris — all of whom return for the 1200m feature.

McGaw and Tentyris have since raced again, but Griffiths believes Legacy Bound can improve significantly under different track conditions.

He pointed to the slower inside section where Legacy Bound travelled last start as a key disadvantage.

“He won first-up down the straight and he was good last start,” Griffiths said.

“In my opinion, they finished in order with how the track was playing that day, from widest first to us fourth, on the slower side.

“Derby Day usually plays very fair... If that is the case, I would like to think we’re well-and-truly in the mix.”

Legacy Bound was unbeaten heading into the Danehill, including a strong two-year-old win over 1200m in Adelaide.

The stable believes Saturday’s extended sprint trip suits, though Griffiths is wary of rain.

“Maybe from barrier four in a straight line, that would do me fine, but the wet is negative for us,” Griffiths said.

“Since his last race, he’s had a nice little tick-over jump-out, and he galloped well on Monday.

“We’ve got the right horse, he’s in the right form and we just hope the little one percenters go our way on Saturday.”
