Mr Brightside back for a fifth Champions Mile

Class campaigner Mr Brightside returns to Flemington for another tilt at the Champions Mile, and co-trainer Ben Hayes says age has done nothing to dull the star gelding’s desire.

The eight-year-old again brings form into Saturday’s $3 million event, having finished second in the King Charles III Stakes and earlier adding a record-breaking third Makybe Diva Stakes.

“He’s thriving,” Hayes said. “His campaign has been excellent and he’s showing every sign that he’s right where he needs to be.”

Mr Brightside owns one of the best 1600m résumés in the country, having won 13 races at the trip including last year’s running of this very contest. He has also claimed the All Star Mile and been placed repeatedly in major Group 1 events.

His connection with the Champions Mile stretches back to its Derby Day origins when it was previously run as the Cantala Stakes. He improved each year, culminating in a decisive win in 2023.

The gelding will again meet rivals he knows well, including Ceolwulf, Pride Of Jenni, Treasurethe Moment and Stefi Magnetica. He and Craig Williams will jump from a wide draw.

“There’s no soft wins at this level,” Hayes said.

“But he’s a champion for a reason. We know he’ll turn up and give us everything.”
