Zambardo to take on Via Sistina in 2025 Champions Stakes

Mick Price will roll the dice with Zambardo on Saturday as the improving gelding takes on superstar Via Sistina in the Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
Rather than take a softer path in a Benchmark 90 on Oaks Day, Price and Michael Kent Jr opted for a test at the elite level.
“We can drop back whenever we want,” Price explained.
“He’s had a terrific prep and now it’s time to find out where he fits.”
Price is confident the horse will be best suited being ridden quietly.
“He can idle when he hits the front, so we’ll ride him to finish off strongly.”
Zambardo’s campaign has included wins at multiple tracks and a Benchmark 78 success over the same distance at Caulfield.
But he now meets Via Sistina, who comes off back-to-back Cox Plate wins and sits above $17.5 million in earnings.
Jamie Melham, riding high after her Melbourne Cup victory, partners Zambardo from gate nine.
Golden Path also contests the feature after a strong second in the Crystal Mile.
“He’s honest but generally falls short at this level. Still, he’s fit and well,” Price said.
“He’ll give what he’s got.”
